In 1964, Willys-Overland produced, under license, a vehicle based on the Renault Alpine 108 in Brazil. It was called “Interlagos”, a tribute to the speed circuit and fans who purchased the car. Although a small engine, the Interlagos is very light, with a body made of plastic reinforced with fiberglass. This has contributed to the first production run of sports cars in the South American country to establish itself as a respectable vehicle. When production ended in 1966, more than 800 were produced and sold. Now, Renault seems to be studying a new version of the Alps, but the designers Brazilian Joao Paulo Cunha Guimaraes and Felipe Melo Coelho has evolved more rapidly and already has a plan to bring back to Interlagos life.
Like its predecessor, the new Interlagos use a Renault engine and will be a low-cost sports car, as all parties are already available and produced in Brazil. The heart of this machine will be the Mégane 2-litre engine capable of producing 142 hp and a torque of 19.2 kg, and managed by a six-speed manual speeds. Other features will celebrate the fans of sports cars: Interlagos will be a two-seater, mid-engine, rear-wheel drive car. It will be short, wide and low: 3.87 m long, 1.15 m in height and 1.78 m in width. The weight is less than 1,000 kg designed.
When production begins, plans are to Interlagos export to other countries, such as the United Kingdom.
