GMC Denali XT Hybrid debuts at the Chicago Auto Show

4 02 2008

Toyota may have surprised some people at the Auto Show in Detroit with his BAT-A Concept, a mid-sized monohull that the pickup truck is 4.61 m long with a wheelbase of 2.85 m, and uses a four-cylinder engine mated to a hybrid system, but it is not surprising GM has been able to react. The real surprise is that it was done quickly. Only a month after Detroit, the Motor Show in Chicago, will witness the arrival of the GMC Denali XT truck hybrid, a vehicle in front of the A-BAT with certain advantages.

The GMC Denali is bigger than the A-BAT (5.21 m long and with a wheelbase of 3.13 m), but keeps the central idea: the monocoque instead of a body-frames structure, which improves the driving (as the body is more rigid) and light weight (to save on fuel), and the hybrid system. In fact, it uses the two types of hybrid system GM has developed in association with BMW and Daimler, which is considered one of the best market today. According GMC, this equation of lower weight and hybrid technology allows the Denali XT to 50% better than other medium truck when it comes to fuel economy.

GMC concept also uses a larger engine. In place of the four cylinders, the car manufacturer gives the American public a V8 engine to 4.9 direct injection technology and Active Fuel Management, which allows the engine to have half of its cylinders disabled to save fuel. In other words, a V8 that can be transformed into a four-cylinder. Not bad at all, even because people can use a renewable fuel in the engine, E85. This is perhaps the first direct-injection engine capable of working with ethanol as well as gasoline.

With a height adjustable independent suspension with four wheels, and a minimum of overhanging rear-wheel-drive Denali XT is built on the Zeta platform, the same used for theHolden VE Commodore Sportwagon, for example. It is also said to anticipate all future design GMC vans. No one says officially, but if the Denali XT has been well received by customers, it may even be the first with this idea to go to the dealers.
