The new gas-powered B 170 NGT (Natural Gas Technology) Blue Efficiency is capable on both gas and premium class, while gasoline still deliver 85 kW / 116 hp of power, equal to that of the petrol-powered version. A fully fueled B170 NGT can be more than 1,000 km.

The Mercedes B-Class, the B150 (95 hp), B180 CDI (109 hp), B200 CDI (140 hp), the B170 (116 hp), B170 NGT (116 hp), B200 (136 hp) and the range topping-out ceremony B200 Turbo (193 hp).

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Sports Tourer in better shape than ever before

After three successful years, Mercedes-Benz has reviewed the design and engineering of the B-Class. The facelift program focused on the environmental impact, efficiency and comfort, with further progress achieved in each of these areas. Thanks to a series of detail improvements, the four-cylinder engines burn now up to seven percent less fuel than before, and are characterized by remarkably low exhaust emissions that under the current EU limits by more than 90 percent. Mercedes-Benz has a new ECO start / stop function for the high-volume B-150 and B-170 models. This turns the engine stopped when the traffic lights, for example, a fuel saving of up to nine percent in the practical application. Other new developments include the Bi-fuel petrol / gas drive in the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY, together with the active support of the parking spaces required for both drivers helps a suitable parking, and then into manoeuvre.

Since its premiere in the summer of 2005, the B-class is now in the blueprint for a new kind of car harmonize the advantages of different vehicle concepts: the four-door model has the dynamic design of a sports sedan, the exterior dimensions of a compact car , the feeling of spaciousness of a plot of land, the versatility of a mini-MPV and, of course, the safety of Mercedes-Benz.

The sales figures for the B-Class yet a clear proof that the Mercedes-Benz product planners hit the mark with a concept, which offers the driving needs of today’s sophisticated society: Since mid-2005 more than 325000 motorists in the world were Won by the Sports Tourer.

The redesigned front section injected the B-class with more self-confidence and assurance than before. This is primarily due to the grille with the three chrome fins Cross in metallic gray painted and the Mercedes-Stars in their midst. However, the more impressive appearance of the B-Class also stems from the new-look bumper – whose design emphasizes the large air vents at the bottom – like the modified bonnet.

Design: new front end creates a powerful presence

This new design language of the front is evident and, as a consequence, very powerful, symbolizes the athletic attributes of the B-Class even more clearly than before. Apart from the power and performance potential of these qualities, the car is his agility and thrust forward, which is further underlined by the more pronounced arrow shape of the hood, grille and bumper. This has the effect that the entire front seem to be dynamically surging forward – a highly expressive styling element of the current Mercedes-form language, which can be better appreciated than ever before in the 2008 model years version of the B-Class. The front end’s arrow form continued later in the form of a quiet, but effective line, the center of the hood.

Typical features of the current Mercedes-style are also very much in evidence in the side profile of the B-class, which is an exciting interplay between taut forms and crisp lines. Of particular importance is the character, which is gradually from the front to the rear wing tail light, wherein an impressive gap between the concave and convex surfaces of the body along the flanks. This line also underscores the body’s wedge-shaped form, and thus there additional impact on the sport touring the athletic, powerful character.

In 2008 Model B-Class, the design on the sides still seems harmonious and elegant than before, because the housing exterior mirrors, door handles and rock panels are painted with the body color on all model variants. The new hubcaps and light-alloy wheels touch of class more outward looking.

The rear styling draws on the dynamic flow of the lines on the front and sides. A direct visual connection is created by the tail light assemblies, the upper edges merge seamlessly with the character line along the sides of the vehicle. The rear lamps sports a new high-end look brilliance and drag the view of the large tailgate, now with improved ergonomic handle chrome strips. The rear bumper has been rebuilt, and contains a black-grained plastic insert on his face, as upper serves as a standard, a load sill guard. If the B-class is either chrome or with the sport package, this use is made of polished stainless steel instead to another highlight on the shiny tail design.

Interior: High-grade appointments with new upholstery products and trims

High-class appeal, the attention to detail and a sense of spaciousness plenty – these qualities have always been inextricably linked with the B-Class. The winning combination of shapes, colors and materials teams with the spaciousness of the interior, the pleasant feeling all its surface materials, and the expansive window areas most inviting ambience. This is due to the high seating position – which, incidentally, improves the visibility of the driver of the vehicle – while the relatively high belt line promotes a feeling of security, without the inmates feel in any way.

The Mercedes-design team has further improved the interior with a new upholstery fabric, and a new fabric patterns for the seat cushions. If the B-class is ordered with the sports package, which side are trimmed strengthens based in ARTICO man-leather and slabs in the middle canvas. The interior door panels also with a new cloth trim.

The center console is still lined with trims on both sides, but they are now diagonally from brushed aluminum in a gray smoke finish. The same meticulous integrated Trimm held again in the vicinity of the circuit in the door and trim, the interior an added sense of refinement. These fine scores show how much attention to detail was also invested in the base version of the B-Class, as well as the high standards to which it has been given.

Diesel engines: consumption by a further seven percent

The B-class will continue with a choice of six engines – two direct-injection diesel units (80 kW/109 hp and 103 kW/140 hp) delivers up to 300 Newton metres torque, and four gasoline engines with a peak power of up to 142 kW / 193 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Newton metres. The four-cylinder units, a number of detailed improvements to further reduce fuel consumption.

For the diesel models, this means that the combined fuel consumption NEDC
The B 180 CDI and B 200 CDI, to as much as seven percent – depending on the tire size – 5.2 to 5.4 and 5.4 to 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres, respectively. The two turbo models are therefore also a rare sight at the gas station from now on, the B 180 CDI hours can be over 1000 km on a single tank filling (54 litres).

Petrol models: new fuel-ECO start / stop function

Depending on model and engine performance, the four petrol variants of the B-class return figures of consumption between 6.6 and 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the driving NEDC cycle. From autumn 2008, “car” is more sparingly with the arrival of the B 150 and B 170 BlueEFFICIENCY models with the ECO start / stop function (optional). The new feature turns the engine off automatically when the driver shifts to neutral at low speeds, while depressing the brake pedal. If the criteria for the termination of the engine are met, a special display appears in the instrument cluster to inform the driver.

The date at which the clutch is pressed, or the brake pedal is released, the engine back to life springs almost silently and in a fraction of a second. This ability to restart the engine quickly yet smoothly gives the ECO start / stop function is a key advantage over other systems of this type. To achieve this, Mercedes-Benz fits into a starter-generator, to the crank shaft on the belt drive. This allows the engine to run much faster and much quieter than with the conventional starter batteries. During the trip, the starter-generator feeds the electrical system aboard the B-class with energy.

In practical operation substantial fuel savings of up to nine percent can be achieved with the ECO start / stop function, especially when driving in city traffic with frequent stops at traffic lights or in massive.

Natural-gas-drive: a clean and economical alternative

Another innovation is the B-class series bears the initials “NGT” on the right side of the tailgate. They stand for “Natural Gas Technology” and identify a model variant, which is so economically and ecologically compatible, courtesy of his bi-fuel drive: The B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is capable on both gas and premium deliver quality, while gasoline An identical maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp.

In addition to the gasoline tank, there are five natural gas reservoirs, for a total capacity of 16 kg corresponds to a range of more than 300 kilometres. With NEDC overall consumption figures of 7.3 litres of gasoline and premium 4.9 kilograms of natural gas per 100 kilometers, the new B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is therefore in a position to reach a total range of more than 1000 kilometres. The driver determines which energy source for the engine is running at the push of a button on the multifunction steering wheel, an electronic control unit, the switch immediately without shocks – even while on the move.

The four-cylinder engine was modified by Mercedes-Benz to provide additional gas injectors at the bottom of the intake manifold. A close liaison with the governor pressure electromagnetic valve regulates the supply of gas and keep the pressure within the system constant.

The installation of the gas reservoirs, which are located in the back and bottom of the passenger footwell, reduces the trunk volume of the B class of 128 to 422 litres (VDA measuring method), but there is still plenty of space for the implementation of a family’s luggage.

The lower carbon dioxide emissions and cheaper gas fuel costs represent an attractive alternative to gasoline and diesel, both environmentally and economically. On the NEDC cycle, the CO2 emissions are 17 percent lower than in the petrol-powered B 170 to 135 grams per kilometre. If the 4.9 kilograms (7.5 cubic meters) of natural gas consumed per 100 kilometres with the new B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY converted into the equivalent quantity of gasoline energy, fuel per kilometre is about 50 percent less than when running on gasoline.

Mercedes engineers have, for the first time, compiled an eco-balance for the gas drive. There is an element of the environmental certificate awarded for the B-class of Germany’s TÜV Technical Inspection Authority. Mercedes-Benz is the only automobile brand in the world, has been granted this certificate, which is based on the highest international standard ISO 14062 “Design for Environment”. It is a confirmation of the Stuttgart-mark total commitment in all areas of environmental protection. Unlike the only standardized measurement of the exhaust emissions and fuel consumption on the chassis dynamometer, Mercedes engineers analyze the environmental impact of vehicles over their entire life cycle – from their production, with its long use and finishing with its end-of – life available.

mercedes_b_class_facelift_5.jpg

In all, more than 40000 individual processes come under the microscope, their analysis, calculation and assessment ultimately a comprehensive eco-profile. This, in turn, forms the basis for the environmental certification of the B-Class.

The results of this analysis on an integrated total distance of 150000 km highlight, for example, a number of clear advantages for the gas drive. The total CO2 emissions are about 20 percent lower than the comparable gasoline engines. Nitrogen oxide emissions are eleven percent lower, while the experts have calculated a 54 percent difference in carbon monoxide emissions over the entire life cycle for the gas drive. The greater ecological costs of the manufacturing process for the new B 170 NGT is therefore the balance after a distance of 17300 kilometers.

The environmental concept of the B-Class is clearly evident by its use of high-quality recycled plastics, for example, or its component parts made of natural materials such as flax, cotton, coconut fiber, wood veneer and fibers of abaca banana.

Occupant protection: extensive security features are further improved

When it comes to security, the B-Class sets an example for all other models to follow these dimensions: in the European NCAP test program, the Sports Tourer received the highest rating of five stars.

The comprehensive safety specification, the two-stage front airbags, belt tensioners for the front and rear outer seats, belt force limiters, and active head restraints in the front, ISOFIX child seat system and head-thorax sidebags, has now been supplemented by Apart from the crash-responsive emergency lighting in the passenger compartment. After an accident of a given severity, the lights come on automatically to allow the inmates to their camp in the dark easier and speed up the work of the emergency services.
Active safety: stop lights flashing as a warning to other motorists

Accident prevention is the top priority of the Mercedes-security concept – a concept that the “car” reality. To help them the critical situations under control safely and with ease, driver of the B-Class can be very effective, standard-Fit technology in the form of systems such as ABS, brake assist and ESP ®. The Mercedes engineers have a little further, but with a view to developing a way of other motorists provides additional security. The result is a simple, but very effective method to avoid rear-end collisions: stop lights flashing. This technology is security as a standard for the years 2008 Model B class.

During the tests, Mercedes engineers were able to ascertain that the braking reaction time of drivers is faster by an average of 0.2 seconds, when they see a flashing red warning signal instead of conventional stop lights in an emergency braking situation. This shortens the braking distance of approximately 4.40 metres, if they travel at a speed of 80 km / h, and by a whole 5.50 metres or so during braking of 100 km / h. Brake lights flashing at a high frequency, therefore prove proven to be an effective means of alerting drivers behind the danger of a rear end collision.

The flashing stop lights are automatically triggered when the driver initiated emergency braking when travelling at a speed of 50 km / h or more. And if the B-class is slowed to a standstill at a speed of over 70 km / h, the threat warning also.

Assistance systems: automatic parking with ultrasound and electric steering

The Electronic Stability Program has been expanded to a new standard features: automatic hill-start assist. This will prevent the B-Class from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake to the gas pedal at the start uphill. In such situations, the ESP ® skimps the brake pressure to make pulling away easily.

Reverse parking is also less of a challenge for motorists in the future. The new parking active support (optional) searches for a suitable position on the side of the street as the B-class drives, takes care of all the maneuvers as the steering of the driver reverses into it. How it works: at speeds below 35 km / h, ultrasonic sensors on the sides of the car scanning the zones to the immediate left and right of the B-class, and you can measure the length and depth of the possible parking. Once a suitable location is found, the system flashes a message on the screen informs the driver. If the driver committed the contrary, confirmed the display and presses the accelerator, the active support of the parking lot over control and automatically maneuvers the B-class in the room. All the driver has to do is control the brake and accelerator, the PARKTRONIC system of ultrasonic sensors offer further support by specifying how much space there is in front of and behind the B-Class.

To can use the automatic function parking, the parking lot is only 1.30 meters longer than the B-class – an indication of the enormous technological precision.

The newly developed system consists of a total of ten support ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear apron, and an electronic control unit, the sensor signals and calculates the best way to get into the parking space. This information is sent to the electromechanical power steering in the B-class, so that its electric motor to perform the necessary steering movements.

Infotainment: new systems for the enjoyment of digital audio and Europe-wide navigation

It is not only the spacious interior, the high-quality materials and the standard automatic air conditioning, the B-Class such a joy to stay: The new generation of infotainment systems an important role to play. There are four different options to choose from: 5 Audio, Audio 20, Audio 50 APS and COMAND APS. All devices from the Audio 20 upwards, a radio tuner with dual-color display, Bluetooth interface for mobile phones, CD player, automatic volume control, as well as a port for external audio devices in the glove compartment.

Audio 50 APS also with a Europe-wide DVD-based navigation system and DVD player, while the top-of-the-range COMAND APS offers even more features, including faster HDD navigation system, the music-index, a slot for SD memory cards and voice.

In order for motorists to their personal music compilations on an MP3 player, USB key or other external audio device, Mercedes-Benz has developed an interactive media interface. It can be considered as an option and iPod & Co. can be linked to the Sports Tourer infotainment system. This has the advantage, so that the external audio devices to be operated by simply using the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel, while the title titles in the two-cluster instrument and the center console’s color display.

The sophisticated infotainment systems can be used in combination with the “Logic 7 surround-sound system, which transforms the interior of the B-class in a concert hall on wheels.

An interesting article, but I would have appreciated more information on the
* timescale for the projected hybrid petrol/electric vehicle.
* rubbing strips – the original ones were purely for decoration.
* nature of Ipod integration – does the main display now show track info?
* wiper configuration – the small left wiper was not ideal for LHD cars.
* GPS spec – is there now speed camera info and a 3D display option?
* door coverings – the original fabric was impractical

By the way this looked like a mechanised translation from another language. Please get an English speaker to proof read your grammar!
