The new Ampera is scheduled to go on sale in 2011, and shares GM‘s “Voltec” promote-in mixture approach that’s set to be introduced in the Chevrolet Volt. Propulsion is provided by an occupied-time electric motor, with a small petrol engine/generator aboard to stampede the lithium-ion batteries when desirable. GM says that the Voltec scheme will propel the Volt and Ampera up to forty miles (65 km) on a definite stampede. The engine/generator increases the range to about 500 miles (800 km). Recharging is estimated to take 2-3 hours from a regular 230-volt European opening.
